The benefit-in-kind (BiK) rate is set at 2% for electric vehicles, this very low rate has been extended until 2025 for all vehicles which emit 0g/km of CO2. This compares very favourably against the maximum tax rate of 37% for vehicles which emit 160g/km of CO2. This means that driving an EV will have a minimal impact on an individual’s tax liability. 

The reason for the low BiK rate is to incentivise vehicles which do not detrimentally impact the air quality in towns and cities across the UK. The Government has a big focus on reducing the number of high emissions vehicles across the country, looking to end the sales of new petrol and diesel cars to end in the UK by 2030.

Types of clean air zones

There are 4 types of clean air zones, Class A to D. Class A zones are the most relaxed, and Class D zones with the most strict requirements.

Cities in the UK which have Class C clean air zones include: Bath, Bradford, Tyneside, Sheffield.

Cities in the UK which have Class D clean air zones include: Birmingham, Bristol, 

To avoid being charged in a clean air zone, vehicles must meet the clean air zone minimum standard of Euro 4 (less than 1.0g/km of Carbon Dioxide emissions) for Petrol vehicles and Euro 6 (less than 0.50 g/km of Carbon Dioxide emissions) for diesel vehicles.

3. Home charging installation
